Costa Calma is situated on the Atlantic coast, in the southern part of the Fuerteventura island, and on the Jandía peninsula. It is part of the municipality of Pájara, located 70 km from the capital city Puerto del Rosario which you can reach by bus or by driving the FV-2 road. The Sahara Desert is only 100 km away. The name Costa Calma means “peaceful coast” and refers to its calm waters and waves.
The town has a hot and dry desert climate. It is usually sunny, however, it might rain during the winter months. Costa Calma is a perfect place for people who expect great weather without any surprises.
The resort was founded in 1970 on the grounds around the village called Cañada Del Rio. In 1984 a road connecting Puerto del Rosario with Morro Jable was built. The built-up areas are separated by parks and gardens, enlivening the desert landscape. In the centre of Costa Calma, in front of the Taro Beach hotel, there is the Sotavento shopping centre. There are a few more shopping centres in the town: El Gaj, Botánico, Cañada del Rio, Bahía and Bahía Calma. Costa Calma has a great service infrastructure: restaurants, bars, clubs, pharmacies, ATMs. Most of them are located close to the main beach.
The buildings are generally not very tall. The modern hotels are situated in new neighbourhoods, in the north and south of the city. The town has beautiful, long sandy beaches surrounded by lush greenery. The main part of the city is situated by a small bay. On a 150 meters high cliff nearby there is a lighthouse.
Costa Calma is a famous resort, home to plenty of bars and restaurants, it also has a lot of accommodation possibilities. There are 20 km of sandy beaches, lifeguarded and safe for children. Costa Calma beach is close to the town and right next to it, there is the most famous Playa de Sotavento. Secluded bays and less visited beaches can be also found here. The strong winds in summer make it heaven for surfers. There are many restaurants, a few bars and clubs in the town. Costa Calma offers many activities: you can go on a motorbike trip, bike trip or catamaran trip, ride a Segway, drive a cross-country vehicle or take a diving or kitesurfing course.
Costa Calma is situated close to the Jandia Natural Park. In its western part there are bluffs and cliffs, and in its eastern part you can admire dunes, brushes and stunning beaches. There is also a viewpoint Mirador Morro Colorado, Puerto de la Peña and ruins of an old port, Pájara and a church decorated with Aztec figures and Tuineje – a small town decorated with ornaments and a specific streets layout characteristic for Berber architecture.
