Fuerteventura is the second largest island of the Canary Islands Archipelago. It is located on the Atlantic Ocean, 100 km from Africa. It belongs to Spain, has the area of 1659,74 km² and population of 87 thousand people. Due to Fuerteventura’s warm climate, the average temperature in winter is about 22°C and in summer between 26 and 28°C, what means the temperature during the day is over 30°C. It rains rarely, mostly in autumn and winter.
Thanks to its longitudinal shape, Fuerteventura has the longest coastline of the whole archipelago and over 150 natural, wide beaches of a total length of 200 km. There are different beach types: gravel, white sand, black sand, lagoons. Most of them are located on the east coast, close to the Sahara desert. The wind has been bringing the white African sand here for thousands of years. Fuerteventura beaches are among the best beaches located close to Europe and the only ones with white sand among the Canary Islands beaches.
The most famous beach Playa de Sotavento with fine, gold sand and crystal clear water, located between the ocean and Sotavento Lagoon, is almost 10 km long. It is a perfect place to do water sports, also for beginners. The Windsurfing World Cup is held here every year.
The Costa Calma beach is over 2 km long, full of white sand and palm trees.
The four kilometers long Morro Jable beach is located close to an avenue with shops, recreation centres and restaurants. It’s only 16 km from Costa Calma. A beautiful Barca beach and Sotavento Lagoon are also worth seeing on the way here.
A much less visited Cofete beach, surrounded by mountains, is recommended for people who love peace and quiet.
A beautiful La Pared beach. To get here, take the FV-605 road which starts on the south, by the roundabout, a few kilometers east from Costa Calma and then turns north from the main FV-2 road.
The Ajuy beach with black, volcanic sand is the beginning of an observation route to Caleta Negra (which means “the black bay”), where you can see the ruins of an old port and a few, now empty, chalk mine workings. There is also a cave which is over 600 meters long.
Corralejo beaches with gold sand and turquoise water are perfect for whole family, you can do sports and relax here.
“Dunas de Corralejo” Natural Park is worth visiting to see the dunes. It’s a perfect place to relax, enjoy beautiful weather with family or friends and admire fantastic views.
